The La Costa Canyon Mavericks showed why they may have the best boys lacrosse team in Southern California by whipping the defending Southern Section Champion Foothill 11-5 Saturday at Tustin, CA in a game broadcast live on KBCsports.com.
The Mavericks jumped ahead 3-0 in the first quarter behind two quick goals from sophomore Timmy Andrews. Andrews added a third goal in the second quarter, his third hat trick of the season, as the Mavericks led 5-1 at the half. LCC held the ball on offense for most of the first two periods and lulled the Foothill defenders to sleep with patience, and then scored on quick passes from behind the cage to the front of the crease. The Mavericks could have easily scored 4-5 more goals but they hit the post on several occasions and even missed a couple of opportunities while facing an open cage.
KBCsports.com player of the game David Quessenberry guarded the Mavericks' cage like a pitbull guards his dish. He stoned the previously undefeated Knights on several point-blank shots and even recovered from out of position to make a diving stop on an open cage.
"I don't what got into me," Quessenberry said in the postgame interview.
In the second half, the Mavericks (4-1) continued to pepper the Foothill cage. T.C. Whaley and C.J. Small each added a pair of goals along with a single goal for Aaron Hemeon and Conor Garrett. Small also had two assists in the second half.
Tyler Brown scored two goals for Foothill (5-1) which now heads to the Best in the West tournament in the Bay Area to play, among other teams, St. Ignatius which beat LCC 11-4. |
